About La Leche League International

La Leche League (LLL) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that provides information and encouragement to all mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. LLL is recognized as the world’s foremost authority on breastfeeding.
Accredited leaders help mothers through monthly meetings, by telephone and by email.
Your donation helps us to help other mothers give their very best to their babies, and indeed to their families, communities, and their world.
The La Leche League Love Story

Over 50 years ago, seven mothers of young babies met in a park to talk about breastfeeding. They found that they were not alone in their wishes to breastfeed; as they found that most women wanted to breastfeed, but had tried and failed, didn’t think they had enough milk, or just didn’t think they could do it. They soon discovered the secret to successful breastfeeding was that women needed information and support.

Their little club has since grown to a worldwide organization that is considered to be the world’s foremost leading authority on breastfeeding. Our objective is to help women mother through breastfeeding.
Mothers were designed to breastfeed and babies are designed to feed at the breast.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognize and recommend optimal feeding for babies in the first 6 months as exclusive breastfeeding, with continued breastfeed through the first year and thereafter as mutually agreeable for mother and baby

Benefits of Breastfeeding

Breastmilk is tailor-made, specifically suited to meet each baby’s individual needs, with the precise amounts of nutrients, enzymes and live cells….many components haven’t even been identified yet. Formula is not at all like breastmilk, and while it is an option, it is not the optimal feeding for babies.

Breast is best for Baby, Mother and our Community

Breastfeeding has many benefits, many of which are cumulative, meaning the longer baby nurses, the stronger and more lasting the benefit — many of which last throughout yours and your baby’s lives! Breastfeeding protects baby from illness like colds, wheezing, bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, diarrhea., allergies and eczema It also protects against diseases like diabetes, obesity, cancer and even some autoimmune disorders! Studies consistently show that breastfed babies have higher IQ’s—even premature babies who are breastfeed have higher IQ’s than their artificially-fed counterparts!!

Mothers who breastfeed have lower risk of certain cancers, like uterine, breast and ovarian. They have a lower risk of osteoporosis, postpartum hemorrhage, diabetes… even diabetic mothers do very well with breastfeeding, some even having a remission!

Working mothers who continue breastfeeding enjoy fewer sick days and joyous reunions with their baby, and many report breastfeeding helps them to feel connected with their babies even when they’re apart. Breastfeeding helps a woman regain her pre-pregnancy figure as well as helping her to get more rest. Because breastfeeding gives a mother a ‘head-start’ on bonding and communicating with her baby, mothers gain self confidence and self-reliance as they gain confidence with their mothering skills.

Breastfeeding is ecologically friendly as there is no waste! Also, because it improves the health of both mother and baby, it improves our economy! - Breastfeeding saves a family literally thousands of dollars, which they can spend back into the local economy!
Whatever your breastfeeding goals are, we are here to help through mother-to-mother support and information. All leaders are experienced mothers and have been accredited by La Leche League.
